Snakebites claim the lives of more than 50,000 people in India each year, and the antivenoms used today do not work equally well against all snake venoms. Now, researchers have combined just five laboratory-produced antibody fragments into an experimental antivenom that protected mice against venom from several cobras and king cobras from India – even when treatment was delayed until the venom had already begun to take effect.
