Tool use doesn't just make sea otters more efficient hunters—it may be what keeps them alive when their preferred prey disappears.
Researchers following 196 radio-tagged sea otters off California found that otters using rocks, shells and other objects as tools could tackle larger prey and suffered less tooth damage when their preferred food became scarce.
