Defection is damaging to Saudi Arabia’s prestige – and could strengthen the US hand in the region The United Arab Emirates’ decision to walk out of Opec is a political as much as business decision, and will reignite the simmering rows between the UAE and Saudi Arabia – which had been covered up by their shared anger with Iran over its attacks on the Gulf states since the start of the US-Israel wa…

Vincent Geloso and Alex Tabarrok argue democracy and capitalism go hand in hand: Many people argue that democracy is incompatible with capitalism but they differ on whether democracy will subvert capitalism or whether capitalism will subvert democracy. The first argue that the logic of democracy leads to socialism with James Madison and Joseph Schumpeter decrying […]

Almost nine years ago, I wrote that I would not support Mr. Trump's candidacy: Mr. Trump has not laid out a coherent economic worldview, but one recurrent theme is hostility to a free and open system of international trade . From my perspective as an economics policy wonk, that by itself is disqualifying. And then there are issues of temperament. I am not a psychologist, so I cannot figure out wh…

Kalyan Sanyal’s Rethinking Capitalist Development (2007, 2014) is a rare work of political economy for many reasons. It is written by an economist, but it’s so interdisciplinary that you won’t be able to tell. It is an attempt to theorize capitalism in the postcolonial context from the inside-out rather than outside-in, i.e. with no reference […]

This is not good news : CEA DOA?… MM hears there’s a chance Trump will simply pass on filling the CEA Chair job that at one point appeared to be going to Larry Kudlow. Trump could decide to just stick with Gary Cohn and the National Economic Council and skip over the more academically-inclined CEA. Not a done deal at all but the chatter is out there. Let's hope the rumor is unfounded.

This piece was originally published in Hippo Reads in the fall of 2015. I have edited it slightly to adapt it for Policy Options. Two unrelated announcements this week give the unhappy impression of Russian sanctions busting by German energy companies.
