Protons and neutrons briefly pair up inside the nucleus in short-range correlations, and now, physicists have conclusively identified one criterion for how these particles pick their partners. The result involves the nuclear shell model, which, much like electron shells in atoms, separate the protons and neutrons into different energy shells in the nucleus.
