Nearly everything we do represents one manifestation of an optimization problem. Whether in engineering practice, or life in general, we generally seek solutions to meet objectives that minimize cost or maximize reward, whether stated so formally or not. Acoustics problems are no different in that respect, though must accommodate some unique challenges. Our research community has made meaningful progress to render vibro-acoustic optimization problems computationally tractable. This talk provides a structured overview of optimization methods employed for computational acoustics, offers practical guidance to implement, and provides examples demonstrating their utility.
