Physics employs several exact notions called time: an evolution parameter in classical and quantum mechanics, proper time in relativity, and a statistically selected orientation in thermodynamics. This paper asks what makes any ordering physically temporal rather than a numbering imposed from outside. The Grammar of Time begins with composable continuations, a future-sufficient carrier, and independently calibrated readers. Non-identical restitution makes compositional order physically consequential when a controlled difference remains attributable to its production and changes a possible continued response. The Carried-Order Necessity Theorem establishes conditions under which this production-bearing order cannot be removed by any continuation-sufficient representation without erasing a real distinction. This invariant carried order is proposed as time before clocks. The paper distinguishes this premetric temporal role from causal accessibility, numerical duration, Lorentzian proper time, the thermodynamic arrow, and quantum time, each of which requires additional explicit locks. Time is therefore not a substance or parameter carrying the world from state to state. It is the carried order by which a world can no longer continue independently of what has occurred.
