On Tuesday, D-Wave, Rigetti, Quantinuum, and PsiQuantum each locked in awards of up to 2.013 billion across nine companies. IBM and GlobalFoundries were picked to build wafer and chip capacity. Atom Computing, D-Wave, Diraq, Infleqtion, PsiQuantum, Quantinuum and Rigetti were picked to attack the hardware problems that keep large machines in the lab. Every recipient, Commerce said, gets a minority, non-controlling equity stake in the department with the award. Most of the dollars aren't for a finished computer; instead, they fund the difficult quest to push qubit counts, fidelity, and control systems to drive the next technology revolution. The factories IBM’s planned one billion dollars is the largest check in the slate. The company said it will match that amount in cash and fold in intellectual property, tools and people to stand up Anderon, a three-hundred-millimeter quantum wafer foundry in Albany. Anderon is meant to run as a separate company and sell wafers rather than keep the line captive to IBM machines. A final award notice for Anderon had not appeared on the September 8 NIST list. GlobalFoundries takes the next-largest sum, three hundred and seventy-five million dollars, for a foundry that Commerce said should handle superconducting, trapped-ion, photonic, topological and silicon-spin parts. The company folded that work into a Quantum Technology Solutions unit that is supposed to make processor chips, cryogenic readout circuits, packaging and superconducting interconnects.
