November - December 2026 | University of Amsterdam This course explores the relationship between creativity, generative AI, and the creative industries. With the recent development of generative AI, the assumption that creativity and creative labour were immune to automation is being put into question. This has triggered a series of academic and non-academic debates regarding the concept of creativity, the cultural and aesthetic consequences of these technologies, and the concrete impact on creative workers. This course will offer an overview of these debates and encourage students to examine key questions such as: can machines be creative?; how is artificial intelligence challenging the definition of creativity?; how are aesthetic conventions being transformed?; what are the consequences for creative workers and the creative industry?; what alternative forms of AI and automation can we imagine?
