This paper proposes a functional architecture of consciousness derived from evolutionary pressures rather than theoretical postulates. Seven components — sensor, corrector, predictor (imaginal transcriptor), multimodal canvas, spatial self, attention, and emotional modulator — are traced to specific survival problems whose solutions, accumulated over evolutionary time, constitute the structural conditions for subjective experience. A separate linguistic transcriptor is identified as the most recent addition. The architecture produces experience through a five-step process: perception enters the canvas alongside the spatial self, the reverberation loop between canvas and imaginal transcriptor appropriates the perception across multiple cycles, attention selects and amplifies what enters the loop, emotional firing constitutes the felt dimension, and the result is owned, situated experience. The paper distinguishes two layers of qualia — basic sensory qualia from attentional integration with the spatial self, and full emotional qualia from the systemic firing of the emotional modulator. Three architectural arguments are developed: the biographical impossibility of the philosophical zombie, experience as discrete event rather than continuous stream, and qualia as temporal, internal, and biographical rather than abstract and universal. The framework is positioned relative to Global Workspace Theory, Predictive Processing, Integrated Information Theory, Damasio's somatic markers, enactivism, and Dennett's functionalism. Implications for synthetic consciousness are specified: what current large language models lack is architectural, not ontological, and the gap is solvable by engineering rather than metaphysics
