The association between first trimester iron deficiency without anemia and the development of iron-deficiency anemia prior to childbirth

Universal screening for iron deficiency by adding ferritin to obstetric intake labs identified that first trimester IDWA affects one in four people in our clinics. Of those with first trimester IDWA, the majority (67%) developed IDA before childbirth, corresponding to nearly two-fold increased risk compared to those who were iron-replete, non-anemic in the first trimester.
