Philosophy of Science. forthcomingThe internal dynamics of science collaborations raises important philosophical questions about the role of governance in knowledge production. For this paper, I’m investigating the following question. How does a Big Science collaboration's governance model influence epistemic and normative outcomes for the members involved? First, I will argue that the governance models of transnational physics collaborations combine democratic and consensus-oriented practices, which are in tension with each other. Second, I will pay attention to how democratic and consensus-oriented practices are correlated with instances of epistemic justice and injustice. I provisionally conclude that strained democratic practices heighten the risk of epistemic injustices.
