For Italy this has implications well beyond national airspace. Its combat aircraft regularly contribute to NATO air policing and collective defense missions meaning that a lower cost airborne interceptor could support longer sortie endurance conserve premium missile inventories and provide greater flexibility when dealing with mixed threat sets. In a saturation environment air defense effectiveness increasingly depends not only on the performance of an individual interceptor but on how long a force can continue generating successful engagements before its most valuable munitions are depleted.
