Synthese. forthcomingSlurs can be used and misused in different ways. We examine two related misapplications. Sometimes a speaker mistakes the person they are slurring as being correctly targeted by a slur. Other times, a speaker is indifferent to whether the slur correctly applies at all. We argue that this latter case constitutes a bullshit slur. Such slurs are distinctively troubling. From the speaker’s perspective, indifference to a slur’s conventional application widens the subordinating force of their utterance, directly threatening their target’s equal standing and warranting greater offence than cases of mistaken identity. From the hearer’s perspective, bullshit slurs foreclose a crucial form of counter-speech: self-protection via linguistic correction. This leaves the target in a particularly precarious position: subordinated directly and unable to engage in self-protective counterspeech.
