ThousandEyes, a Cisco company, monitors how ISPs, cloud providers and conferencing services are handling any performance challenges and provides Network World with a weekly roundup of events that impact service delivery. Internet report for August 3-August 9 ThousandEyes reported 502 global network outage events across ISPs, cloud service provider networks, collaboration app networks, and edge networks (including DNS, content delivery networks, and security as a service) during the week of August 3 through August 9. The total of outage events decreased by 2% compared to the 514 outages from the week prior. Specific to the U.S., there were 358 outages, which is down by 2% from 366 outages the week prior. Here’s a breakdown by category: ISP outages : Globally, ISP outages increased from 222 to 254, a 14% week-over-week increase. In the U.S., ISP outages increased from 124 to 175, a 41% increase. Public cloud network outages: Globally, public cloud network outages fell from 204 to 165, a 19% week-over-week decrease. In the U.S., outages fell from 192 to 144, a 25% decrease. Collaboration app network outages: Globally and in the U.S., collaboration application network outages remained unchanged week-over-week at zero outage events. Cisco ThousandEyes Two notable outages On August 6, Cogent Communications, a multinational transit provider based in the U.S., experienced an outage that impacted multiple downstream providers and customers across the U.S. The outage, lasting a total of 32 minutes over a period of one hour, was first observed around 12:40 PM EDT and appeared to be centered on Cogent nodes located in Chicago, IL. Around 20 minutes into the outage, the number of nodes located in Chicago, IL, exhibiting outage conditions, appeared to increase. This rise in the number of nodes exhibiting outage conditions also appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of downstream partners impacted. The outage was cleared around 1:40 PM EDT. On August 5, Zayo Group, a U.S. based Tier 1 carrier headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, experienced an outage that impacted its customers in multiple regions, including the U.S. and Canada. The outage lasted a total of 17 minutes over a 40-minute period and was first observed around 3:15 AM EDT and appeared to be centered on Zayo Group nodes located in Seattle, WA. Around 30 minutes into the outage, the number of nodes located in Seattle, WA, exhibiting outage conditions, appeared to increase. This rise in the number of nodes exhibiting outage conditions also appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of customers and downstream partners impacted. Internet report for July 27-August 2 ThousandEyes reported 514 global network outage events across ISPs, cloud service provider networks, collaboration app networks, and edge networks (including DNS, content delivery networks, and security as a service) during the week of July 27 through August 2. The total of outage events decreased by 16% compared to the 610 outages from the week prior. Specific to the U.S., there were 366 outages, which is down by 20% from 457 outages the week prior. Here’s a breakdown by category: ISP outages : Globally, ISP outages fell from 273 to 222, a 19% week-over-week decrease. In the U.S., ISP outages fell from 185 to 124, a 33% decrease. Public cloud network outages: Globally, public cloud network outages fell from 244 to 204, a 16% week-over-week decrease. In the U.S., outages fell from 228 to 192, also a 16% decrease. Collaboration app network outages: Globally and in the U.S., collaboration application network outages remained unchanged week-over-week at zero outage events. Cisco ThousandEyes Two notable outages On July 27, AT&T, a Tier 1 provider headquartered in Dallas, TX, experienced an outage on their network that impacted AT&T customers and partners across the U.S. The outage, lasting 20 minutes, was first observed around 3:29 AM EDT and appeared to initially center on AT&T nodes located in New York, NY. Around 10 minutes after first being observed, the nodes located in New York, NY, were joined by nodes located in Chicago, IL, in exhibiting outage conditions. A further five minutes later the nodes located in Chicago, IL, appeared to clear before being replaced two minutes later by nodes located in Ashburn, VA, in exhibiting outage condition. This change in nodes exhibiting outage conditions appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of impacted partners and customers. The outage was cleared at around 3:50 AM EDT. On July 30, Liberty Global, a European and Caribbean-focused ISP headquartered in Schiphol Rijk, Netherlands, experienced an outage that impacted multiple downstream providers and customers across various regions, including the U.S., Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. The outage, lasting one hour and seven minutes, was first observed around 1:20 AM EDT and appeared to be centered on Liberty Global nodes located in Miami, FL. Internet report for July 20-July 26 ThousandEyes reported 610 global network outage events across ISPs, cloud service provider networks, collaboration app networks, and edge networks (including DNS, content delivery networks, and security as a service) during the week of July 20 through July 26. The total of outage events increased by 4% compared to the 587 outages from the week prior. Specific to the U.S., there were 457 outages, which is up by 10% from 417 outages the week prior. Here’s a breakdown by category: ISP outages : Globally, ISP outages rose from 241 to 273, a 13% week-over-week increase. In the U.S., ISP outages rose from 136 to 185, a 36% increase. Public cloud network outages: Globally, public cloud network outages declined from 274 to 244, an 11% week-over-week decrease. In the U.S., outages decreased from 248 to 228, an 8% decrease. Collaboration app network outages: Globally and in the U.S., collaboration application network outages decreased from one outage event to zero week-over-week. Cisco ThousandEyes Two notable outages On July 23, Microsoft experienced an outage on its network that impacted some downstream partners and customers across multiple regions relying on services running in Microsoft’s West US region, including the U.S., Canada, the Philippines, Jamaica, Bulgaria, India, Colombia, Egypt, the U.K., Kosovo, Hong Kong, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Japan. The disruption, which lasted around one hour and 3 minutes, was first observed around 10:45 AM EDT and appeared to initially be centered on Microsoft nodes located in San Jose, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Dallas, TX, New York, NY, Atlanta, GA, and Cleveland, OH. Around five minutes into the outage, the nodes located in San Jose, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Dallas, TX, New York, NY, Atlanta, GA, and Cleveland, OH, were joined by nodes located in Des Moines, IA, Chicago, IL, Portland, OR, and San Antonio, TX, in exhibiting outage conditions. This increase in locations and nodes exhibiting outage conditions appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of impacted partners and customers. Microsoft identified the issue as a bug encountered during routine maintenance that caused IP routes between the West US datacenter and their WAN to be removed from more devices than intended. After identifying the root cause, Microsoft initiated a rollback of the change around 1:45 PM EDT, restoring the network by 2:26 PM EDT, with affected services fully recovered by 3:41 PM EDT. On July 23, Unitas Global, a US-based network transit provider that merged with PacketFabric in 2023 and is now operating as PacketFabric, experienced an outage that impacted customers and downstream partners across multiple regions, including the U.S., Taiwan, Colombia, India, the Philippines, Greece, Malaysia, the U.K., Canada, Australia and Mexico. The outage lasted a total of 43 minutes over a two hour and 15-minute period and was first observed around 2:00 AM EDT, and appeared to initially be centered on Unitas Global nodes located in Dallas, TX, and Los Angeles, CA. Around 20 minutes into the outage the nodes located in Dallas, TX, and Los Angeles, CA, were joined by nodes located in New York, NY, Chicago, IL, Denver, CO, in exhibiting outage conditions. This increase in locations and nodes exhibiting outage conditions appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of impacted partners and customers. Five minutes after appearing to clear nodes located in Dallas, TX, Chicago, IL, began exhibiting outage conditions again, this time joined by nodes located in San Jose, CA. Around eight minutes further on, the nodes located in Dallas, TX, Chicago, IL, and San Jose, CA, were replaced by nodes located in Phoenix, AZ, in exhibiting outage conditions, and joined briefly by nodes located in Austin, TX, in exhibiting outage conditions. 15 minutes after the nodes located in Phoenix, AZ, appeared to clear; nodes located in Dallas, TX, and Los Angeles, CA, began exhibiting outage conditions once again. Internet report for July 13-July 19 ThousandEyes reported 587 global network outage events across ISPs, cloud service provider networks, collaboration app networks, and edge networks (including DNS, content delivery networks, and security as a service) during the week of July 13 through July 19. The total of outage events increased by 15% compared to the 409 outages from the week prior. Specific to the U.S., there were 417 outages, which is up by 11% from 377 outages the week prior. Here’s a breakdown by category: ISP outages : Globally, ISP outages rose from 222 to 241, a 9% week-over-week increase. In the U.S., ISP outages rose from 135 to 136, a 1% increase. Public cloud network outages: Globally, public cloud network outages rose from 234 to 274, a 17% week-over-week increase. In the U.S., outages rose from 221 to 248, a 12% increase. Around 31 minutes after appearing to clear, nodes located in Phoenix, AZ, once again, began exhibiting outage conditions, this time joined by nodes located in Dallas, TX. This rise in the number of nodes exhibiting outage conditions also appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of downstream customers and partners impacted. On July 14, Charter Communications, a US-based ISP operating as Spectrum, experienced a disruption that impacted several customers and partners across the U.S. and India. The outage, lasting a total of 33 minutes over a one-hour period, was first observed around 12:10 AM EDT and appeared to be centered on nodes located in New York, NY. The total of outage events increased by 15% compared to the 443 outages from the week prior. Specific to the U.S., there were 377 outages, which is up by 27% from 297 outages the week prior. Here’s a breakdown by category: ISP outages : Globally, ISP outages dropped from 230 to 222, a 3% week-over-week decrease. In the U.S., ISP outages dropped from 145 to 135, a 7% decrease. Public cloud network outages: Globally, public cloud network outages rose from 136 to 234, a 72% week-over-week increase. In the U.S., outages rose from 120 to 221, an 84% increase. The outage, lasting a total of 38 minutes over a one hour and 10-minute period, was first observed around 2:45 PM EDT and appeared to be centered on Comcast nodes located in Chicago, IL. One hour and 5 minutes into the outage, some of the nodes located in Chicago, IL, exhibiting outage conditions, appeared to change. This change in the nodes exhibiting outage conditions appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of impacted downstream partners and customers. The outage was cleared around 3:55 PM EDT. On July 11, Unitas Global, a U.S.-based network transit provider that merged with PacketFabric in 2023 and is now operating as PacketFabric, experienced an outage that impacted customers and downstream partners across multiple regions, including the U.S., the Netherlands, Malaysia, Taiwan, Ireland, India, Canada, Italy, and Singapore. The outage lasted nine minutes and was first observed around 10:40 PM EDT and appeared to initially be centered on Unitas Global nodes located in New York, NY.  Around four minutes into the outage the nodes located in New York, NY, were joined by nodes located in London, England, and Singapore, in exhibiting outage conditions. This rise in the number of nodes and locations exhibiting outage conditions also appeared to coincide with an increase in the number of downstream customers and partners impacted. The disruption, which lasted a total of 51 minutes over a one hour and 50-minute period, was first observed around 4:20 AM EDT and appeared to initially be centered on nodes located in Chicago, IL. Around five minutes after appearing to clear, Arelion nodes located in Seattle, WA, New York, NY, and Denmark, began exhibiting outage conditions. Around 35 minutes after nodes located in Seattle, New York, NY, and Denmark appeared to clear, nodes located in Los Angeles, CA, and Ashburn, VA, began exhibiting outage conditions. A further five minutes later, the nodes located in Los Angeles and Ashburn were joined by nodes located in Dallas, TX, and Sweden in exhibiting outage conditions.
