The group of rotations of a rigid body is not commutative. I understand that the so called infinitesimal rotations commute (up to first order, aka with the help of a group contraction); that is all the motivation I have seen for their introduction. Can somebody please give me a practical example, or perhaps some intuition, as to where and why they are useful in understanding physical phenomena? Preferably in the realm of classical mechanics. Thank you!!
