Published on August 20, 2026 7:27 PM GMT We're hiring a Head of Legal to lead GiveWell's legal function and build a team that can scale with our expected growth. This role will serve as a strategic thought partner to senior leadership, own GiveWell's legal portfolio and strategy, and oversee our Grants Administration function. This is a founding leadership role: you'll design the systems, processes, and team structure that GiveWell's legal function needs as the organization grows. As Head of Legal, you will: Build GiveWell's legal function from scratch and serve as our primary legal decision-maker, developing a calibrated legal strategy as the organization scales Own risk and compliance for a nonprofit that receives donations, makes grants, and operates in multiple jurisdictions, spanning employment law, data privacy, IP, and contract management Provide leadership and management for our Grants Administration function, including guidance on complex or novel grant structures Modernize how legal and grants administration work gets done, using technology to increase capacity and reduce reliance on manual review We're looking for candidates with 10+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience; active state bar membership in good standing; and expertise across nonprofit and tax-exempt law, data privacy, contract negotiation, employment, and international governance. You'll need the pragmatism to know when something requires extreme care and when to keep things simple, plus the ability to translate complex legal risk into clear, actionable guidance.
