Abstract The KNO-violating term mml:msub mml:mif mml:mis of the charged-particle multiplicity distribution in pp collisions measures the relative deviation of mml:mrow mml:mrow mml:mo⟨ mml:min mml:mo⟩ mml:msub mml:miP mml:min from mml:msup mml:mie mml:mrow mml:mo- mml:miz , with mml:mrow mml:miz mml:mo= mml:min mml:mo/ mml:mo⟨ mml:min mml:mo⟩ , and is reported to obey the reciprocal symmetry mml:mrow mml:msub mml:mif mml:mis mml:mrow mml:mo( mml:miz mml:mo) mml:mo= mml:msub mml:mif mml:mis mml:mrow mml:mo( mml:mn1 mml:mo/ mml:miz mml:mo) , taken here as input. Being an evenness condition in mml:mrow mml:moln mml:miz , it generates a tower of local constraints on the derivatives of mml:msub mml:miP mml:min at the mean. The lowest member holds for the ATLAS data at 7, 8 and 13 TeV at the few-per-cent level, while the third-derivative residual testing the next member is not determined with a controlled uncertainty by the present binning and stays inconclusive. The global test is consistent at 7 and 8 TeV, while at 13 TeV a residual deviation remains, which a closure test shows is not a binning artefact. Multiplicative noise in the Mueller colour-dipole cascade, the negative binomial and the dipole cascades with recombination each give an mml:msub mml:mif mml:mis that is not invariant under mml:mrow mml:miz mml:mo→ mml:mn1 mml:mo/ mml:miz , so none of them carries the symmetry. We further obtain a dynamics-independent entropy in the KNO continuum, mml:mrow mml:miS mml:mo= mml:moln mml:mrow mml:mo⟨ mml:min mml:mo⟩ mml:mo+ mml:msub mml:miI mml:mn0 mml:mo- mml:mstyle mml:mfrac mml:mn1 mml:mn2 mml:mo∫ mml:msup mml:mie mml:mrow mml:mo- mml:miz mml:msubsup mml:mif mml:mis mml:mn2 mml:mspace/ mml:mid mml:miz , with <jats:tex-mat
