Abstract We develop a mathematical framework for analyzing inter-regional earthquake triggering using multi-lag transfer entropy. While transfer entropy itself is well-established in information theory, its systematic application to discriminate earthquake triggering mechanisms across tectonic regions has not been previously formalized.
